Deer family lost on Maui

A whole family of Axis Deer found itself lost and trapped in a fenced field in upcountry Maui during a recent visit.

Originally from India, this type of deer was deliberately introduced among the islands for hunting but their population has grown out of control and they are now regarded by many as a nuisance and threat to crops and endemic animals.

But they are magnificent to look at.

The deer family eventually found its way out of the fenced area, but its proximity to farms and homes shows how prevalent the deer have become on Maui.

Beautiful upcountry sunset showing Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge, West Maui Mountains, and Lanai Island.
